我花了好長時(shí)間才明白他是從哪里來的。小王子問我很多問題，我有很多疑惑，可是，對(duì)我提出的問題，小王子好像壓根兒沒有聽見似的。一點(diǎn)一點(diǎn)的，偶然間他無意中吐露的一些只言片語逐漸使我搞清了他的來歷。例如，當(dāng)他第一次看見我的飛機(jī)時(shí)（我就不畫出我的飛機(jī)了，因?yàn)檫@種圖畫對(duì)我來說太復(fù)雜），他問我道：“這是個(gè)什么玩意兒呀？”

    “這不是‘玩意兒’。它能飛。這是飛機(jī)，是我的飛機(jī)?！?br/>
    我當(dāng)時(shí)很驕傲地告訴他我能飛。他聽到后疑惑地大聲說：“什么！你是從天上掉下來的？”

    “是的。”我謙遜地答道。

    “哦！這真不可思議。”

    此時(shí)小王子可愛地笑了起來。這讓我很生氣。我不希望自己嚴(yán)肅的痛苦受到別人嘲笑。然后，他又說道：“那么，你也是從天上來的了！你是哪個(gè)星球上的？”

    這時(shí)，我忽然有點(diǎn)明白他為什么會(huì)在這里，對(duì)于他神秘出現(xiàn)這個(gè)費(fèi)解的秘密，我隱約發(fā)現(xiàn)了一點(diǎn)線索。于是，我中斷了他的提問，迫不及待地問道：“你是從另一個(gè)星球上來的嗎？”

    “你是從哪里來的，我的小家伙？你說的‘我住的地方’是指什么？你要把你的小綿羊帶到哪里去？”

    他沉思了一會(huì)兒，然后回答我說：“好在有你給我的那只箱子，夜晚可以給小羊當(dāng)房子用。”

    “那當(dāng)然。如果你聽話的話，我再給你畫一根繩子，白天可以拴住它。再加上一個(gè)木樁。”

    但是，我的建議看來有點(diǎn)兒使小王子震驚。

    “拴住它？多么奇怪的主意啊！”

    “如果你不拴住它，”我說，“它就到處跑，會(huì)跑丟的。”

    我的這位朋友又發(fā)出響亮的笑聲：“你想它能跑到哪里去呀？”

    “任何地方。它一直往前跑……”

    這時(shí)，小王子鄭重其事地說：

    “這沒有什么關(guān)系，我那里一切都很小很小。”

    接著，他或許略帶傷感地又補(bǔ)充了一句：“一直朝前走，也不會(huì)走出多遠(yuǎn)……”

    chapter 3

    it took me a long time to learn where he came from. the little prince, who asked me so many questions, never seemed to hear the ones i asked him. it was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed to me.

    the first time he saw my airplane, for instance (i shall not draw my airplane; that would be much too complicated for me), he asked me: "what is that object""that is not an object. it flies. it is an airplane. it is my airplane." and i was proud to have him learn that i could fly.

    he cried out, then: "what! you dropped down from the sky""yes," i answered, modestly.

    "oh! that is funny!"

    and the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter, which irritated me very much. i like my misfortunes to be taken seriously.

    then he added: "so you, too, come from the sky! which is your planet"at that moment i caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence; and i demanded, abruptly: "do you come from another planet"but he did not reply. he tossed his head gently, without taking his eyes from my plane: "it is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away..."and he sank into a reverie, which lasted a long time. then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he buried himself in the contemplation of his treasure.

    you can imagine how my curiosity was aroused by this half-confidence about the "other planets." i made a great effort, therefore, to find out more on this subject.

    “my little man, where do you come from what is this ‘where i live,’ of which you speak where do you want to take your sheep”

    after a reflective silence he answered: "the thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.""that is so. and if you are good i will give you a string, too, so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to."but the little prince seemed shocked by this offer: "tie him! what a queer idea!"“but if you don’t tie him,” i said, “he will wander off somewhere, and get lost.”

    my friend broke into another peal of laughter: "but where do you think he would go""anywhere. straight ahead of him."then the little prince said, earnestly: "that doesn’t matter. where i live, everything is so small!"and, with perhaps a hint of sadness, he added: "straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far..."
